Hi, I'm Ned Williams, LCSW MSEd

I am a psychotherapist in Austin, Texas. I provide individual therapy to people from all stages of life, from adolescence through late adulthood. I have experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings and have supported individuals through a wide range of mental health issues and life stressors. I use a person-centered, psychodynamic approach to therapy that prioritizes you and your needs.

Prior to pursuing my Master of Social Work at the University of Texas, I worked for more than a decade as an educator.

    My Story

I decided to become a psychotherapist after working for more than a decade in the field of education as an elementary school teacher and teacher educator. During that time, I came to realize that what I loved about teaching students had much less to do with the curriculum I was conveying than with the psycho-social development I was supporting.

I use a psychodynamic, person-centered, trauma-informed approach that prioritizes your strengths and needs while exploring the ways in which your unique history has informed how you respond to new situations. Through this safe, accepting and non-judgmental process we explore your unconscious beliefs, traumas, and attachment experiences in order to strengthen your coping strategies and uncover new possibilities.

I believe that the  key to changing our behaviors and emotional reactions lies in an examination of our history. Each of us is a product of the interaction of our own unique biology and our life experiences - especially the circumstances of our early life, our family culture, and our contact with the wider world. Equal in importance to the objective facts of that history is our internal experience and understanding of it. In order to fundamentally change the ways we respond to challenges in the present we must begin with examining our lives from the beginning. Importantly, though, we must not just look to the past but also experience and explore the way these adaptations manifest in the present.

I will work with you to focus on your reactions and behaviors in the here and now ensuring that our work together translates into the rest of your life. Each person contains within themself the keys to healing, growing and learning to lead a more fulfilling life. The goal of our work together is to help you uncover them.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English from Wesleyan University, a Master of Education with a concentration in special and general education at the elementary level from Bank Street College of Education and a Master of Social Work from the University of Texas. Prior to enrolling at UT, I studied at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Study in New York City for several years. I received training in Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) at the Anna Freud Center. I am EMDR trained. I am currently a candidate in adult psychoanalysis at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Houston.
